Been playing around with the Hipstamatic iPhone app, a great $1.99 little gem that produces some vintage looking shots. The gorgeous graphical interface was designed to look just like the 1982 original camera, and it is ridiculously fun and simple to use.

Upon buying the app, you get:

3 Lenses

John S

Jimmy

Kaimal Mark II

2 Flashes

Standard

Dreampop

4 Film Types

BlacKeys B+W

Kodak Verichrome

Ina’s 1969

Blanko

Buy Even More Options

With all of those options, there’s loads of shot variations to enjoy. There’s also extra lenses, gels, flashes, and film to that you can buy from the Hipstamatic store to power up your camera even more. The “in-app” store allows you to purchase new items without even leaving the app.

What Does The App Look Like?

Check out this video showing how the Hipstamatic works:

Send Photos

Also within the app, you can send the photos directly to your Facebook and Flickr accounts.

Here are some shots initial shots that I took playing around with the camera. Depending on the lens that you chose, a unique frame border is added to the final result.

Even if you do actually know how to play keyboards / synth, you have to admit these two beasts look like a Christmas dream sitting next to each other, and will provide crazy dual index finger romps with ease. (That really sounded weird, but whatever — that’s what it is!) The video will answer all of your questions about how these units work separately as well as together.

I decided to go with the most local printer possible, Fireball Printing, for my new business cards. After seeing their fliers around town and hearing how they produce quality prints for inexpensive rates, I was sold.

For $81 (including tax) I got 1000 of these business cards featuring double-sided color / double-coated digital printing on 12pt stock. This shot above is just an iPhone snap from the card sitting on my window sill.

If you’re looking for a quick turn-around, I’d recommend Fireball Printing, as they were ready to pickup within 48 hours of hitting submit from their web order form.

I’m not sure if many people actually swing by their office / facility to pick up print jobs, but it is a bit confusing figuring out where they are located. There is a little sign for Outlaw Printing on the huge 5-story warehouse that they share with other companies, but there is no sign for Fireball Printing.

Once I entered the building, I did see a mini-sign that said Fireball Printing with the number 3 next to it. So, I figured they were on the 3rd floor. After taking the old school elevator to the 3rd floor, I couldn’t find them at all. Some guy helped me out and then I found them on the 5th floor. Beautiful view up there, I must say!

I had a very subtle background on both sides of my cards, and they seemed completely washed out. That’s my only gripe really about the end print results. Then again, I designed these cards quite quickly without testing out the results in CMYK, so I’m to blame for that one. Everything looks glorious on your iMac with the monitor brightness boosted!

Back in the mid-80s, I played a lot of video games on the first NES: Nintendo Entertainment System. Like most people, one of my favorites was Super Mario Bros. Amazingly, 25 years later, I still love playing the game. After getting a Wii this past Christmas, one of the first things Melissa and I did was purchase the old school NES game for $5 and had it downloaded to the Wii. There’s something relaxing about playing an old game that is always challenging, and the old secrets of the game come rushing back upon maneuvering Mario about.

The new Super Mario Bros. Wii has the same feel of the classic 2D side-scroller of the 80s, but of course with much improved graphics and sound from the original version. Again, you are traversing 8 new worlds and can “power up” with mushrooms, fireball flowers, and the invincibility stars. But there’s some other way cool new features such as powering up with an ice-thrower that freezes enemies, slipping into a penquin suit to easily maneuver ice, wearing a spinning cap to fly through the air, and also shrink to an even smaller mini-Mario for tight spots — oh, and you can ride Mario’s buddy Yoshi around and have him eat enemies, sucking them down with his tongue.

The familiar theme songs are highly polished, and it’s almost fun listening to the music and sounds of even the most struggling board. Once you enter a new world, you can save your game as well. I can go on and on about this game. There’s loads of mysteries in it. Hidden vines, hidden pipes to go down, hidden bricks to bash with your head. It’s all there. My wife killed a tortoise once and she gained 30-some lives!

So, if you’re into the original 2D version, you’re going to dig this game big time, and the controls are set up the same, so you’ll be ready to go. And if you don’t know what to do, the game indicates what controller actions you should perform to do something new, such as pick up a barrel and toss it.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The only thing that is tough about the game is playing with multiple people at the same time. You can have four people play simultaneously, but you can easily kill each other as well. Bumping into each other, accidentally bouncing off each other’s heads etc. can get very annoying and make it difficult to progress.

After about seven months of playing with my iPhone, these are my favorite iPhone apps so far. Any apps that you recommend? Let me know!

Stocks

Watch your money go down the drain live as it happens. The Stocks app that comes with the iPhone is one of my favorites, as I’ve gotten back into the Stock Market again recently. You can select which stocks you want to always immediately appear. Upon highlighting a particular stock, you receive the latest links to articles related to that stock and its competitors, as well as comparisons on the stock’s performance.

All Countries

Scroll through all of the countries of the world and scan their national flags. Then, select a country to gain info on their population, monetary units, ethnicity, religions, economic summary — everything. Very useful on the train when you suddenly want to find out what national resources Chad provides.

The New York Times

The New York Times news stories categorized by latest and most popular. Select an article and kick back and enjoy. You can really lean back because the text is massive.

Restaurants

I really don’t eat out at many fast food or chain restaurants, but I find this app absolutely eye-opening. Click on a restaurant, such as McDonald’s, and you’ll find all of the food that McDonald’s offers. Select an entree, appetizer, dessert, and get the nutritional (or lack of) information. For example, a Big Mac has 540 calories, 29g of fat, 10g of saturated fat, 1.5g of trans fat, and 1040mg of sodium!

Facebook

Update your Facebook status and post photos that you’ve taken with your iPhone camera. A must-have for Facebook addicts. You can also view a stripped down version of friends’ profiles.

Evernote

I use Evernote.com to organize all of my “to do” lists and projects. The Evernote app allows you to seamlessly tap into your account, update content, and view all of your Evernote wonders. I highly recommend this app if you’re looking to organize your projects and need to check up on them over multiple computers.

Flickr

If you use Flickr for photo management, this app will come in handy. Upload photos you’ve captured with your iPhone straight to Flickr, name it, select the set, and boom, you’re done. Browse your Flickr contacts’ photos as well.

Dub Siren

If you dig reggae and dub music, get this jawn. Dub Siren brings you all of the reggae and dub internet radio stations all in one finger scroll, and also allows you to add your own effects to the streaming songs! Add your own twist on songs with cool spin, tempo, delay, mute, pitch, and sine wave effects. Lock in your effects as well. The graphics on this app bring a 1970s Lee Perry studio panel feel to the app.

Stitcher

Stitcher categorizes podcasts, easily allowing you to find as well as search for podcasts that might be up your alley. Star a podcast to add to your favorites. Your favorites will always be ready to listen to in succession upon loading the app. I highly recommend the Adam Carolla (for celebrity interviews and good laughs) and Boagworld (for web designers).

Phone Flicks

If you have a Netflix account, Phone Flicks allows you to update your Netflix queue as well as browse movie titles to add to your queue. If you have queue battles with your spouse, this will give you the upper hand in getting the movie that you want to watch to the top of the queue.

Nambu

There are a bunch of Twitter apps out there. Nambu is how I prefer to update my Twitter status and read the feeds of the people that I follow. On launching the app, you’ll see a number indicating all of the updates that you haven’t read yet. The chill gray / black background works nicely with the white text for enhanced readability. Click on the profile links for more individual info.

Flixster

Watch the latest movie trailers on your iPhone, get movie reviews, and check out what movies are coming out deep into the future. For example, I can see that Scary Movie 5 is coming out in 2011 and Spiderman 4 is coming out in 2012. Check local theatre listings and find out when movies come out on DVD as well.

ESPN Score Center

Get live scores from the MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA and loads more. Customize it to receive only the sports that you care for. Tap into the score zone for play-by-play scoring information. An amazing app that I see pop-up in bars all the time during NFL games. A must have for sports nuts.

Whole Foods Recipes

Say you have a chicken in the fridge, but you want to cook it differently than you always do it. Tap into the Whole Foods Recipes app, enter in “chicken”, and receive chicken-based recipes immediately. This also comes in handy when you’re at the grocery store and you draw a blank on how to spice up your dinners.

Melissa and I had our Wedding Rehearsal party at her Uncle Tom’s house in Richboro, PA. We had a blast, and thank them repeatedly for letting us have the party at their gorgeous house.

As gifts for the groomsmen, I decided to get them custom bobblehead dolls. There are many web services out there that specialize in this, but I settled on WeBobble.com.

To order, you simply pick out the body / character that you’d like and then proceed to upload a front and profile photo of the person’s face. You then pick out some details from their palette: skin tone, hair color, eye color, etc. And then you’re on your way! The prices start at about $90.

First, WeBobble will sculpt out the head. They then send you a JPEG proof of the head for your review. Here is an example of Wayne’s head, one of the better ones that they did:

Wayne Miller’s WeBobble.com Bobblhead doll.

If you don’t like what WeBobble has done with the head, just email them what you want modified and they will do it for you. After that, they paint the head and ship it to you…directly from China. Yes, your WeBobble head is made in China, and is packaged in Chinese newspapers, although their web site says their “Design Center” is in New Port Richey, Florida…Ughh.

So, one day I simply got sick of receiving daily Orbitz.com emails about specials and promotions. It was time to unsubscribe. But instead of just clicking on a handy “unsubscribe” feature at the bottom of the email that did it all in one fell swoop, I had to log-in to Orbitz first. I didn’t have my account info at the time, so I just gave up for the time being.

I then posted my sudden irritation on Twitter:

“Having to log-in to a website to “unsubscribe” from an email is lame. Turns out I don’t want Orbitz to notify me daily about vacations.”

A couple days later, I got an email from Orbitz, stating:

“Your comments posted on Tweeter regarding our promotional emails was forwarded to our attention for review. I appreciate the opportunity to respond to your concerns.”

Now, aside from being a bit spooked and creeped out, I was laughing for a bit that they didn’t know the difference between “Twitter” and “Tweet”.

So, is there really someone at Orbitz employee searching the web for complaints, especially on Twitter, and looking to make amends? If so, that’s amazing and actually a very welcoming feature in my mind.

With every service based company, there are going to be loads of rants on the web, especially on Yelp.com, Epinions.com etc. But I just find it fascinating that Orbitz was on the hunt for them.

The buggers usually don’t get near me, but Melissa gets eaten alive out there sometimes. So, instead of getting an annoying zapper or hosing the backyard with chemicals, I’m trying a green solution of using Mosquito Barrier, which is a liquid treatment composed of potent garlic cloves.

<a href="http://www.mosquitobarrier.com/ target="_blank">

Apparently, garlic’s natural sulfur repels all kinds of insects, and farmers have been using products like this for generations. Hopefully it works! I just sprayed down our little yard and it reeks like 5 loaves of garlic bread beneath your nose.
